10 UTILITIES: EXCLUSIVE TO UBUNTU USERS!

Whether you’re a relative novice or a seasoned pro, we all want to get the most from our operating system. Ubuntu, like most modern OSes, has more to offer than what is presented at first blush.
From tweaking and refining the look, behaviour and performance of the Unity desktop to performing system maintenance, there are a huge array of useful utilities and apps that can help tune Ubuntu to meet your needs in no time.
Caveat time: Ubuntu has always shipped with ‘sane defaults’ — options that just work — out of the box. These defaults are well suited for the majority of people. They’re tested, accepted and recommended.
But one size doesn’t fit all. For the tinkerers and experimenters among us the default experience is a starting point from which to tailor.
So, without any more waffle, here is a set of 10 utilities which is only for ubuntu users!!! :)

Unity Tweak Tool

unity-tweak-tool
I’ll kick off this list with the big one: Unity Tweak Tool. The kitchen sink of customisation, Unity Tweak Tool offers a comprehensive set of system tweaks tuned for Ubuntu and the Unity desktop.
It’s stuffed full of switches, toggles and control, letting you configure everything from the way Unity looks to the way it behaves. Use it to quickly and easily change the GTK theme and icon set, set up hot corners, adjust launcher size, add or remove workspaces, and — notably —  enable Unity’s elusive ‘minimise on click’ feature.
Free and readily available from the Software Center, Unity Tweak Tool is one well worth keeping in your back pocket.

Unity Privacy Indicator

indicator-privacy-in-ubuntu
Privacy. A big, big issue and rightly so. But the topic is often shaded rather than binary; you may be happy to let some data or habits, say apps you frequently open, be logged locally, but not be ok with the searches you make in the Dash being ferried to a third-party server (however anonymous that data may be).
Privacy Indicator is a useful tool to help you stay abreast of what files, folders and services are being accessed, logged and recce’d on the Ubuntu desktop.
With a quick click on the ‘eye’ icon added to the desktop panel you can:
  • Toggle Online Search Results, Zeitgeist, HUD Logging & GeoIP
  • Quick access to clean Zeitgeist, F2, Recent Files, etc.
  • Options to show/hide desktop icons and name in the panel
The latter two options may seem a little misplaced in this app but have less obvious privacy implications for those who take screenshots or screen share.

Unity Folders

unity folders
Android, iOS, OS X, Chrome OS, and GNOME Shell have app folders, and so can Unity with a nifty third-party app.
“Unity Folders” allows you to organise apps on the Unity Launcher into handy folders — think ‘games’, ‘office’, ‘social‘, etc. You get quick access to your favourite apps without needing to open the Dash, which may suit your workflow.
Each ‘folder’ is, actually, an application that opens up and positions itself near the origin point. But the overall effect is one that looks like an OS X style stack or an Android folder popover.
Folder icons can be customised or auto-generated based on the applications tucked up inside. Existing folders can be edited, rearranged, rename and re-other stuff, too.
  • Create as many folders as you like
  • Choose custom or auto-generated folder icon
  • 3 folder layouts to choose from
  • Set custom icons for apps added to folders
  • Edit existing folders

Caffeine

A staple for many of us, and not just in our drinks, Caffeine offers a fast, silent way to stop your screensaver or lock-screen kicking in. The degree of usefulness will depend on your circumstances (read: quirks of your system), and though it’s not quite as user friendly as it once was, it’s still worth checking out.

System Monitor Indicator

multiload-indicator-in-ubuntu
If you’re a stat hound who likes to keep tabs on apps, processes and hardware status, Linux makes it easy. From Conky Configs to Terminal Commands — there’s no shortage of ways to monitor your CPU usage, network traffic or GPU temperature.
But by far my favourite is System Monitor Indicator – also known as indicator-multiload — available from the Ubuntu Software Center. It has a host of configuration options, too.

Power Saving Tools for Linux Laptops

Zareason Ultrabook Front

TLP

Linux distributions don’t have the best reputation when it comes to power efficiency on portable devices.
If your own Linux laptop can barely get you from the sofa to the kitchen before needing a recharge, there are some tools you can try.
TLP is one of the most popular automated background tool promising to prolong battery life of laptops running Linux. It does this by adjusting the settings and behaviour of system processes and hardware, such as enabling Wi-Fi power saving mode, runtime power management of PCI bus devices, and processor frequency scaling.
It’s available to install on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and later using the dedicated TLP PPA and comes with a ‘catch-all’ config to get you started. The more advanced users among you can dive in and manually adjust the settings to suit your own hardware, something that a thorough guide on the TLP wiki makes easy.

Laptop Mode Tools

If TLP sounds a little too complex — and there’s no shame if it does — there’s a simpler alternative: Laptop Mode Tools. This package is available to install from the Ubuntu Software Center and keeps the tweaks made to a set of sane defaults (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.).
Laptop Mode Tools cannot be installed at the same time as TLP.

Intel Graphics Installer

intelgraphicsdriverinstaller
The Intel Graphics Installer tool is a must-have for those running Intel graphics hardware who want the best performance they can get. It makes finding and installing the latest Intel GPU drivers a painless, fuss-free affair — no PPAs or Terminal kung foo needed.

Hardware Stats

iNex features
If you plan on upgrading your PC or replacing a worn-out part you’ll need to get some specific hardware details, such as RAM type, CPU socket set or what PCI slots are available.
I-Nex makes unearthing this, and host of other detailed system stats, easy.  Use it to find your motherboard model number, RAM stepping, S.M.A.R.T. status and…well, pretty much anything else you can think of!

Disk Space Visualizer

disk-usage-visualizer-for-ubuntu
In this age of 1TB hard drives we might not need to be as prudent with disk space as we once were. But for those of using a smallish SSD, running multiple partitions or working in a virtual machine with a fixed-size virtual disk, there’ll be times when freeing up a bit of extra space is required.
GNOME Disks, installed in Ubuntu by default, makes finding the biggest space-gobbling culprits easy. Ideal for locating hidden logs, caches, and media files.

A Complete List of App Stores across All Mobile Platforms

In today’s overpopulated mobile arena, the name of the game is distribution. Whether you are selling your app or offering it for free with integrated ads, your goal is maximum downloads. Of course, that is a task that is easier said than done. With so much competition out there in the various app stores, getting noticed is not an easy feat. As a developer, your best bet is to distribute your app via as many channels as possible. If you choose this strategy, you are in luck, since you have so many available app stores, each one providing a channel of distribution for your app.

This is all very nice, but as a developer, how do you even find all these app stores? Is there a central database available that is updated with the announcement of every new app store, which is pretty much a daily occurrence? You would think so, wouldn’t you? Distimo, a leading information provider in the mobile space has an excellent resource, which you can view here.
At inneractive, as part of our mission to help mobile developers maximize their revenue, we decided to become that database. You will find a central list of app stores for all mobile platforms below. In addition, this post will be updated whenever a new app store is born, so make sure to bookmark this page. To start making money from your mobile app now, sign up with inneractive.

Getting Started

The list is long and always getting longer, so if you are looking for the short version, we recommend the following strategy:
  1. First thing’s first, each platform has its own dedicated app store and that is where you want to be first.
  2. Once you are up and running on the App Store or Market, you should consider offering your apps on the larger app stores such as Getjar and Mobango.
  3. Once the downloads start pouring in from these channels, no reason not to offer your app in the smaller app stores as well… To view a full list of all app stores including even the smallest of them, click here for the WIPConnector list.
Here goes:

Cross Platform- inneractive Cross Platform M2M

  • Getjar: Getjar is a cross platform mobile app store that is available worldwide. According to downloads, it is the largest 3rd party app store with over 900,000 downloads and 18,000 apps to date. GetJar was the first app store to release Angry Birds for Android, which took off in popularity, and even crashed the Getjar servers for a few hours.
  • Dell Mobile Application Store: Dell now has over 40,000 apps in its app store and supports multiple platforms. One differentiating factor with Dell’s store is that developers get a 60% rev share, as opposed to most other channels that work with 70% for the developer.
  • Handmark: Handmark is an app store available worldwide and also features apps from various platforms including desktop and mobile web apps. In addition, Handmark has a downloadable app for Windows Mobile devices. According to recent stats, Handmark has over 4,000 apps hosted on its platform.

iOS- inneractive iOS SDK

  • Apple App Store: Apple launched their app store along with the iPhone 3G in June 2008. It was originally available in 62 countries, and is now accessible in 90. The App Store now stands on over 300,000 apps for iPhone alone and another 70,000 iPad apps. It is important to note that you will not find any other official app stores for iOS since Apple does not allow other channels of distribution. There is of course, the unofficial app store for the jailbreaking community, Cydia, but that is another topic for another time.

Android- inneractive Android SDK

  • Android Market: The Android Market is Google’s official storefront for Android apps. However, unlike iOS, Android is open and that openness comes to fruition in possible distribution channels as well. The Android Market currently has 135,000 apps, and launched in October 2008. The Android Market is well known for its relatively lenient approval process as compared to Apple’s App Store.
  • Amazon Appstore: As you have probably heard, Amazon decided to throw its hat into the mobile ring with its own Android app store. The Amazon store now offers over 4,000 Android apps, but has some serious advantages over the Android Market. These include help with discovery by recommending apps to users, special promotions to keep users coming back, and many more unique features. The Amazon Appstore made headlines when it launched the Angry Birds Rio game exclusively.
  • Archos Appslib: Archos offers its own Android app store for high end Android devices with larger displays. This app store has over 21,000 apps and Archos aims to make it the premier app store for Android.
  • SlideME: Launched in April 2008, SlideMe is an alternative to the Android Market and now hosts over 3,000 Android apps.

BlackBerry- inneractive BlackBerry SDK

  • BlackBerry App World: Launched in April 2009, the App World has over 22,000 BlackBerry apps, and a reach of over 20,000,000 users. The App World unlike its competitors is not available worldwide, but RIM is always adding more supported countries.
  • CrackBerry Store: CrackBerry is a leading online publication for the BlackBerry community and the site also has its own app store as well as native app for BlackBerry devices. The current amount of app in the CrackBerry Store is undisclosed.

Palm

  • Palm App Catalog: Launched in June 2009, the App Catalog now offers more than 6,000 apps for the WebOS platform. However, it is only available in 8 counties worldwide.

Nokia- inneractive Symbian SDK

  • Nokia OVI Store: Launched in May 2009, the Ovi Store now has over 54,000 apps and support in over 230 countries worldwide.

Windows- inneractive Windows SDK

  • Windows MarketPlace for Mobile: Launched in October 2009, the Marketplace now over 2,300 apps for the Windows platform. Microsoft is now investing its resources to build up its developer community for the new Windows Phone 7 operating system. The Windows Phone 7 apps now stand at 11,500 apps.
There you  have it. Of course,  in addition to the app stores mentioned above, there are many stores provided by operators such as Verizon and T-Mobile. There are also websites that offer an online directory of apps for certain platforms such as BlackBerry. One such example is Mobihand. New app stores are introduced daily and some of them are actually very exciting. One example of a new app store with a twist is Openspace, which gives users the ability to purchase an app and use it across all available platforms.
As mentioned above, we are going to be updating this page as new app stores become available. Also, if we left any major app stores out, please let us know! What other information would you like to see here?

9 Killer Ways To Get Traffic Without SEO Or Social Media

Getting Website Traffic
You want traffic.
You want relevant, targeted traffic that will convert.
Yes, we all know you need to have great content, do SEO and share on Social Media.
But there other viable ways to get traffic.
Here are 9 killer ways you can get traffic without SEO or social media.
Side note: check out the resources page because there’re tools there that’ll get you fast traffic.

1. Find And Pull Method

This is perhaps one of the easiest ways to bring traffic to your blog. All you have to do is find popular blogs in your niche and bring the already existing traffic back to your blog. Sounds easy right? Well if you know how, it kind of is.
  • For this method to work, you need to find out about relevant posts on high traffic blogs in your niche as soon as they are published. You can solve this problem using Google Alerts, which is a free Google service that sends you emails on new content across the web that may be of interest to you. Set up Google Alerts so that it sends you an email as soon as a popular blogger writes an article very closely related to a post you have previously published (We will get into how to set it up soon).
  • For the second step go to the post as soon as it is published, actually read it, and write out a relevant and helpful comment after the post but instead of linking your name to your blog’s homepage, link to your post on related content. This way when they click through, they are immediately on a highly relevant page that they are interested in. And because they read your comment, which was useful and unique, they already think of you as an authority.
Here is how you set up Google Alerts. Where it says search query, type in a term related to one of your posts that you want to bring traffic to.
Google Alerts Search Query

Set results type to blogsHow often to once a dayHow many to only the best results.
These settings will make sure that you only get relevant posts from popular blogs. If you don’t mind getting a lot of emails you can even set the How often setting to As-it-happens, which will give you a higher chance of getting there before anyone comments. You can go back and set up as many alerts as you want for as many of your posts as you like.

2. Viral Content Buzz Community

Viral Content Buzz is a place where you can earn points for sharing other people’s content and use those very points to get other people to share your content.
Yes, I realize this post isn’t supposed to have social media related methods for getting traffic, but Viral Content Buzz doesn’t really have to do as much with social media as it has to do with showing your content to a community. There is no crazy social media tool, strategy or trick involved. You simply have to submit your content to the site and it will send traffic your way.
On some level it’s nothing more than a place where competent people from different niches gather to share quality content. Now, if you happen to like something shared by someone, you can help them out and Tweet it or Like it on Facebook. The more you participate in the community and share other people’s content, the more exposure you can get for your content.
Viral Content Buzz thoroughly checks your social media profiles to makes sure that your Facebook and Twitter profiles that you are using to promote other people’s content are real profiles with real followers and plenty of activity. This makes sure that none of the people joining the community are looking to take advantage of it. Because these are real people with real followings that are genuinely sharing your content, you get a lot of visibility and traffic.
Join Viral Content Buzz and submit your best content. Your content will be shared by people that would not have seen your articles otherwise and you will get traffic that is genuinely interested in reading what you have to say.

3. Derek Halpern’s Drafting Technique

This is a technique popularized Derek Halpern of Social Triggers. The drafting technique takes advantage of your competitors slip stream much like Nascar drivers do. What does that mean? Well, in Nascar (as well as bicycling and other racing sports) each competitor tends to stay right behind the one in front so that they have to deal with less air friction. As the first car spends more energy pushing through the air, it creates a slip stream right behind where there is less air density for the next car to push through. This means that the second car has to spend a lot less energy to achieve the same results.
Here is how you use the slip stream to your advantage. The idea is simple. You see your competitors somehow land an article on big sites and get huge coverage. Instead of feeling sad about it, you can use this to your advantage to get coverage for your own business or website as well.
When you see that someone in your niche has gotten a post on a huge site, you learn two things:
  1. This particular site accepts guest posts.
  2. The kind of topics they are looking for in their guest posts.
With this knowledge in hand you can contact the blog or main stream media site and pitch them a similar idea for a guest post you they will be happy to publish. They already published something similar so you know they would be happy to do so again. There is simply less friction. Just make sure it is not actually the same idea and that it is something similar that will add some value to their site.
Find blogs that are authorities in your niche and take a look at their posts that are guest posts. Make a list of similar ideas you can blog about and send them an outreach email pitching them a one or few of those ideas those ideas. Mention the similar posts already published on their site and tell them why you think your post will be just as good and maybe even better.

4. Link To Bloggers In Your Posts

Link to other bloggers in your post. That’s really all there is to it. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is never linking out. Link out to others in your posts and they will take notice of you, most of them will tweet about your post at the very least. Some of them will even link back to you. This is a easy and free way to get traffic. Just don’t forget about your readers and make sure that the links are relevant.

5. Use The Intro Method To Get Massive Forum Traffic

Using Forums to drive traffic is pretty well known. It’s also one of the easiest way to send traffic to your site.
Here is how you use forums to send massive traffic. This method was originally talked by Diggy at ProBlogger in much more detail. Go to a forum you participate in regularly and simply start a new thread mentioning your newest post like Diggy.
forum post
Think about it. If you were at your favorite forum and you saw a thread to a link that was actually interesting and full of useful information, wouldn’t you be inclined to check it out? Make sure your title is catchy and if your forum is in your niche and it has a high enough traffic, your results should look something like this:
forum links
Some forums have rules against this kind of thing so check the guidelines first. If this seems like something that’s in the grey area for a particular forum, you can start your thread with simply giving out free information or part of your post and end it with saying “you can find more tips on how to get traffic here”. If people liked what you had to say or found it useful, chances are they will check out the link.

6. Do Interviews

Interviews are like video guest posts. Interviewing someone is also a bit like linking to someone except now they are much more likely to share and link to the interview. There are advantages to both being the interviewer and the one getting interviewed.
  • Why Be Interviewed – Obviously this sends traffic, but more importantly this establishes you as an authority in your niche. Why would anyone waste time interviewing someone who isn’t important? Because you will be seen as an authority, people who come to check out your blog or website will be more likely to stick around and comeback.
  • Why Interview – If you interview someone and post it on your blog, chances are the person you interviewed is going to share it in every way that he or she can think of and probably even link to you. Interviewing someone who is important makes you seem like a bit of an important figure in your field as well. You become an authority by association. Say for example you saw a post by some random blogger where he interviewed Sir Richard Branson on video. Wouldn’t you suddenly think that this blogger is someone important?
Use HARO to get interviews and be interviewed. HARO stands for Help A Reporter Out and is a service that used by news agencies like ABC and FOX. Here is how HARO works.
When you go to HARO, you can sign up as a reporter or a source.

If you sign up as a source, you will get emails with a list of people who are looking to interview experts in different fields. Each interviewer will give a summery as to what they are looking for in their interviewee, which looks something like this:
HARO Email
If you qualify, and would like to be interviewed, you can simply send them an email saying so, and you will almost always get a reply immediately. By using HARO, you may be able to land yourself an interview on a huge mainstream media outlet.
If you sign up as a reporter, you just have to fill out who you are looking to interview in what subject every time you want to do an interview and your request will be there in the next email.

7. Use Your Email Signature.

Let all those emails you send work harder for you. Place a link to your website in your email signature. People are lazy and don’t like to take time to find out what your site is or even bother typing it in the URL bar. So make it really easy for them. Make your site only a click away by placing a link to it after your name in your signature. If you use Gmail, there are plenty of other things you can do to use Gmail like a marketing machine.
This makes a bigger difference than you think. Steve Krug in Don’t Make Me Think talks about how every action you are asking people to take causes the number of people to go through with it to drop drastically. Why force people to take more actions than necessary?

8. Be A Case Study

Businesses and people always need testimonials saying that their product or service works. Be that testimonial. If you end up being a case study that they showcase on their site, it can end up sending you a good amount of reoccurring traffic as well as establish you as someone of importance. If you try a product or service in your niche and found that it was useful, send them an email saying that you use the product and it did this and that for you. Be detailed in how it helped you.

9. Take Advantage Of Communities like Bloggers.com

HTML5 is a core technology markup language of the internet used for structuring and presenting content for the world Wide Web. It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard (created in 1990 and standardized as HTML 4 as of 1997) and, as of December 2012, is a candidate recommendation of the World Wide Web Consortium. (W3C). Its core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices (web browsers, parsers, etc.). HTML5 is intended to subsume not only HTML 4, but also XHTML 1 and DOM Level2 HTML.
Following its immediate predecessors HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a response to the fact that the HTML and XHTML in common use on the World Wide Web are a mixture of features introduced by various specifications, along with those introduced by software products such as web browsers, those established by common practice, and the many SYNTAX ERRORS in existing web documents. It is also an attempt to define a single markup language that can be written in either HTML or XHTML syntax. It includes detailed processing models to encourage more interoperable implementations; it extends, improves and rationalises the markup available for documents, and introduces markup and application programming interferences (APIs) for complex web apps. For the same reasons, HTML5 is also potential candidate for web platform.. Many features of HTML5 have been built with the consideration of being able to run on low-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets. In December 2011, research firm Strategy Analytics forecast sales of HTML5 compatible phones would top 1 billion in 2013.
In particular, HTML5 adds many new syntactic features. These include the new <video>, <audio> and <canvas>elements, as well as the integration of scalable vector graphics (SVG) content (that replaces the uses of generic <object> tags) and MathML for mathematical formulas. These features are designed to make it easy to include and handle Multimedia and graphical content on the web without having to resort to proprietary plugins and APIs. Other new elements, such as <section>, <article>, <header> and <nav>, are designed to enrich the semantic content of documents. New attributes have been introduced for the same purpose, while some elements and attributes have been removed. Some elements, such as <a>, <cite> and <menu> have been changed, redefined or standardized. The APIs and Document Object Model (DOM) are no longer afterthoughts, but are fundamental parts of the HTML5 specification.HTML5 also defines in some detail the required processing for invalid documents so that syntax errors will be treated uniformly by all conforming browsers and other user agents.
